Stockgrowers - Thune & COOL

Stockgrowers happy about Thune's COOL fight

News Release - September 25, 2019

RAPID CITY, S.D. - The South Dakota Stockgrowers Association wants to commend Senator John Thune as he stood up and fought for cattle producers when he reaffirmed his support for COOL and more transparency within the markets during a Senate Ag Committee hearing Sept. 25th. In response to testimony given by Shane Eaton, a cattle producer, Senator Thune said, “I too was opposed to the repeal of Country of Origin Labeling in 2015.”

South Dakota Stockgrowers Association President Gary Deering says, “Senator Thune has been a great advocate for agriculture in South Dakota, and he showed great leadership today. Senator Thune and his staff are always ready to listen and are a pleasure to work with”.

The Senate Ag Committee held the hearing in regards to a downswing in the markets and in particular, the big drop the market witnessed after a fire at a Tyson plant in Holcomb Kansas.

“Cattlemen are struggling, and with the fall run coming up they are growing increasingly more anxious as they are worried about paying their bills. We are gracious that Chairman Roberts, and other Ag Committee members, such as Senator Thune, are taking this seriously.” adds James Halverson, Executive Director of The South Dakota Stockgrowers Association.
