Inmate serving manslaughter sentence out of Pennington County dies of apparent suicide

SIOUX FALLS. S.D. – An inmate serving time for a conviction out of Pennington County at the State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls has reportedly died by suicide.

Michael Hand, 25, was found unresponsive in his cell on April 2 and died the next day at a Sioux Falls hospital.

Hand was servin a 25-year sentence for first degree manslaughter in connection with a 2014 murder.

Hand pleaded guilty to first degree manslaughter for the beating death of 47-year-old Myron Rock in a Rapid City alley.

Hand reached a plea deal with prosecutors to avoid spending life in prison and was instead serving a 25 year sentence.
