Iola May (Kerwin) Langley

Iola May (Kerwin) Langley, 90 of Spearfish, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2023 at her home overlooking the Spearfish Creek that she loved.

Iola was born at the Kerwin farm outside of Spearfish on November 26, 1932, to William “Bill” and Jeannette (Larive) Kerwin.  She attended 1st grade at a little country school and then attended Spearfish schools graduating in 1950.  She attended one year at Black Hills State University while living at home helping her father on the farm.

She married Lee Langley on February 13, 1965 at Ottawa , Kansas.  The family moved to Spearfish in 1967 where she has resided since.

She has been a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church most of her life, singing in the choir for 40 some years, also a member of St Joan of Arc and a greeter in the church for many years.  She worked at the former Ben Franklin and has worked at Charles Apartments for years and cleaned many houses for over 30 years.

Iola is survived by her five children, Diane (Ed) Bertrand, Billings, MT, Dave (Cindy) Langley, Gillette, WY, Virginia (Kevin) Emery, Sioux Falls, Patty (Gary) Maki, Sturgis and Tanya (Darrin) Wood, Rochester, MN; step-children, Sandra Eubanks, Duncan, OK, Jim (Linda) Langley, Friendswood, TX, Twila (Langley) Langness, Houston, TX, Carol (Langley) Hammitt, Dallas, TX; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; brother-in-law Dwight (Elaine) Langley Ottawa KS.

She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; siblings, Julia Kinghorn and Martin Kerwin; and grandson, Andrew Wood.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 3:00pm, Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish.

Iola’s children would like to extend their thanks and appreciation for the brief care that she received from Monument Health Hospice.  In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish or to Monument Health Hospice in her name.
