Jack W. Hartinger

Jack Wayne Hartinger was born in-Mobridge, South Dakota, on July 5, 1926 to Victor and Grace (Anderson) Hartinger the second of 6 children.

Jack married Violet Katherine Mauch on June 14, 1946, at Astoria, OR while he was in the Navy. To this union two daughters were born, Jackie and Vickie.

Jack took basic training in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. Jack was on a tugboat that took decommissioned boats to be disposed of. As Seaman First class this was part of his job.

Jack lived on the family ranch until he was 9. He attended school in Landau and when the family moved to town, he attended school in Mobridge. As a young man he worked many jobs. He worked on Angostura Dam, Mt. Rushmore, as a hay hauler in Ft. Yates, ND, as a farm hand in Angela, MT, mechanic at Chevy garage, oil fields at Black Thunder, propane truck driver for Newcastle Propane. Newcastle, WY would be home until 1963 when the family moved to Rapid City, SD. Jack worked at Jacobs Co., and finally at Patron’s Cooperative hauling propane for 24 years and 2 weeks. He retired at 62 years old.

In his spare time, he enjoyed bowling. He loved cars, especially Fords. The outstanding car in the family was a 1957 Ford Fairlane. Vi, Jackie, and Vickie all learning how to drive THE Ford Fairlane. Jack worked with his former son-in-law Andy and friend Al on a car that Al owned that ran on Black Hills Speedway. After retirement he took up woodworking and Vi painted them, giving his creations away to family and friends.

He was a member of the Amateur Radio Club of Pennington County doing the weather net every day, a volunteer group of weather reporters who provide daily weather reports.

In 2000, Violet passed away. In 2002, Jack married Vi’s best friend, his second love. He married Mary (Bies) Paulsen on April 20. They had 11 wonderful years together and were very happy until she passed away in 2013.

Jack had a wry sense of humor and liked to change words to fit the situation much to the frustration of those around him! It was just Jack!

He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Grace. His beloved wives, Violet and Mary; former son-in-law Andrew Kuntz; stepson-in-law Steve Paulsen; and granddaughter Jackie Lynn Rathman.

He is survived by Jacqueline (Jackie) Layh and husband Craig; Victoria (Vickie) Kuntz and friend Mike Davis; step-daughter-in-law Pattie Paulsen; and stepdaughter Cyndy Paulsen. Grandchildren Kassandra (Kassie) Layh; Timothy Rathman, husband of Jackie Lynn; Jaymie Kuntz and sons, Taylor, Jacob, Diedrich, Raiden, Maximus, and Tiberius; Scott Paulsen and wife Jessica; and Matt Paulsen and wife Michele, and their daughter Kaylee; Jeni Lynn Cargill and husband AJ and her children Chandra and Nigel Harris; and Jamie Chapman and husband Bryan and their son Logan.
