Juvenile summoned to court in connection with shooting

STURGIS, S.D. – A juvenile who was hunting with a Piedmont man who was fatally shot last fall was summoned into juvenile court this week.

The Meade County Sheriff’s Office says the male juvenile was summoned to court to answer questions about the shooting that claimed the life of 30-year-old Dylan Evans.

First responders were called to an area north of Red Owl on November 12th for a report of a hunter who had been shot. Deputies with the Meade County Sheriff’s Office found Evans lying in a field. He had been shot once.

Evans had been hunting with several other subjects at the time, including several juveniles.

Due to the fact the male summoned into court Monday was a juvenile, no further information about his appearance is being released. That includes whether or not any charges have been filed.

The statute regarding juvenile hearings is below:

26-7A-36. Hearings closed unless court compelled otherwise–Exceptions.

All hearings in actions under this chapter and chapter 26-8A, 26-8B, or 26-8C are closed unless the court finds compelling reasons to require otherwise. However, all pleadings and hearings shall be open and a matter of public record if a juvenile is summoned into court for an offense which if committed by an adult would constitute a crime of violence as defined in subdivision 22-1-2(9) or a crime involving a drug offense in violation of § 22-42-2 or 22-42-3, and at the time of the offense the juvenile was sixteen years of age or older.
