STURGIS, SD – The Mitchell Kernel baseball team got off to a slow start Sunday at Strong Field but poured it on late, beating the Sturgis Scoopers 14-7.
The Scoopers led 6-4 after three innings before Mitchell tied things up in the top of the fourth on a two RBI single by Jonah Schmidt. Sturgis took a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the fourth after Dustin Alan scored on a wild pitch by Kernel hurler Jake Helleloid.Â
Both teams were scoreless in the fifth inning.
The Mitchell bats came alive late as the Kernels plated two runs in the sixth and six more in the seventh to defeat the Scoopers, 14-7.Â
Mitchell (2-1) pounded out 12 hits and were led by Dylan Soulek, who had three hits and two RBIs. Helleloid got the win for the Kernels. Ridge Inhofer had a triple, two singles and two RBIs for Sturgis (2-5). The Scoopers had eight hits, four errors and Kelton Olson took the loss on the mound.Â
Sturgis travels to Rapid City on Thursday to take on Rapid City Stevens at McKeague Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6pm.Â
