STURGIS, S.D. – The Pierre Lady Governors made just two field goals in the first quarter but used a tough, physical man-to-man defense to hold the Sturgis Scoopers to just 19 percent shooting from the field in a 48-36 win.
The Lady Govs led 8-6 after one quarter. Pierre was two of 16 from the field and Sturgis was three of 16 in the quarter. The cold shooting continued for both teams into the second stanza with Sturgis converting three field goals in 14 attempts and Pierre making only three of eight shots. Scooper junior Kaylee Whatley got into foul trouble and sat on the bench for much of the second quarter. The Lady Govs were deadly from the charity stripe, making nine of 10 in the second quarter to take a 22-18 lead into the half.
Pierre extended their lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Scoopers 13-8 to lead 35-26 after three. Senior Caytee Williams led the Lady Govs with six points in the third. Sturgis got to within seven points late in the fourth but were forced to foul. Pierre sophomore guard Remington Price was perfect from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, converting six of six to lead the Lady Govs to their first win of the season.
Pierre was led by Caytee Williams with 16 points and seven rebounds. Price was a perfect 10 of 10 from the free throw line in the game and finished with 15 points. Pierre was 13 of 50 from the field for 26% and 21 of 29 from the charity stripe for 72%. The Lady Govs had 16 turnovers and 26 rebounds.
Whatley had 13 points and nine rebounds for Sturgis. Reese Ludwick and Megan Petrocco added five points apiece. The Scoopers were 11 of 56 from the field for 19% and 11 of 23 from the free throw line for 47%. Sturgis had 20 turnovers and 35 rebounds.
The Scoopers (1-2), host Aberdeen Central on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 1:30pm. The Lady Govs (1-2), travel to Spearfish on Saturday.
