Late night fire guts Lead auto repair business

LEAD, S.D. – Multiple agencies responded to Lead last night for a business fire on the town’s Main Street.

The fire was reported at JDM Customs, an automotive repair and custom tuning shop at 325 East Main.

Fire crews battled the blaze with gusty winds and slippery conditions, due to some snow that had fallen earlier in the day. The cold weather hampered firefighting efforts.

Crews were on scene for a good portion of the night, making sure the fire didn’t spread.

Up to three homes next to the business were evacuated due to the dangerous smoke coming from the fire.

In a Facebook post, the owner of the business stated:

“Thank to everyone for reaching out. Thanks to all the firefighters working hard to get the fire out. Will keep everyone posted with updates. Again thanks.”

Some vehicles and a snowmobile were reported to have been lost in the fire, but no injuries have been reported.

Fire crews remained on the scene Thursday morning, as the building continued to smolder.

Among the fire agencies reporting were Brownsville, Spearfish Canyon, Rochford, Whitewood, Spearfish, Johnson Siding, and Pennington County fire crews.

Lawrence County Emergency Management, the Department of Transportation, and Lead city services also joined the firefight.

Cause of the fire is still under investigation due to crews still working the fire Thursday.
