STURGIS, S.D. – A late summer thunderstorm fired up over northeastern Wyoming and moved across the northern hills Friday, prompting severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings.
The initial tornado warning included Spearfish and areas to the north. The National Weather Service in Rapid City says the tornadic activity was radar indicated, although there were several reports of funnel clouds popping out of the thunderstorm.
Spearfish sounded its tornado warning siren to have people take shelter as the bulk of the storm moved just to the community’s north. Wind gusts between 50 and 60 miles per hour were reported.
The storm then trekked eastward, prompting tornado warnings along the Meade-Butte county line.
Vale reported nearly one inch hail and gusty winds and Nisland reported a wind gust of 55 mph.
The storm also crossed over St Onge, where wind gusts up to 60 mph were reported.
In Sturgis, a severe thunderstorm warning was posted, although the heaviest of the storm passed to the north. Sturgis got the gusty winds and some rain.
