UPDATE – Law enforcement in Sturgis capture man who escaped custody Tuesday morning

STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade County Sheriff’s Office says an 18-year-old man who escaped custody earlier Tuesday has been apprehended.

Law enforcement says 18-year-old Caleb Richter was located before noon today.

Chief Deputy James Johns says Richter was spotted by Sturgis Police in the 500 block of Lazelle Street. After a short foot pursuit, he was taken into custody.

The sheriff’s office says Richter was initially arrested in connection with a report of an injured female found walking on Bear Butte Road. Upon arrival at the Meade County Jail, Richter broke free from the deputy and fled.

Authorities say he was handcuffed at the time of his escape.

In an abundance of caution the Sturgis Schools were notified of his escape and took appropriate action.

Richter was arrested for Simple Assault, Probation Violation, Possession of a Controlled Drug, and numerous other warrants. He now faces additional charges including escape.
