WHITEWOOD, S.D. – The South Dakota Attorney General’s office will investigate an officer involved shooting in Whitewood Friday.
According to authorities, law enforcement responded to a report of a male acting erratically at approximately 11:15 Friday morning.
A Whitewood Police officer initially responded to the Sonset gas station, where a physical altercation ensued. As a result, the officer fired their sevice weapon, striking the male.
The male was taken to a Rapid City hospital with a serious, but non life-threatening injury.
Sturgis Police Chief Geody VanDewater says some of his officers were called for emergency backup after the shooting incident. VanDewater says Sturgis police helped on scene, along with the Highway Patrol, Whitewood Police and Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.
The DCI, took over the lead on the investigation of the shooting at the request of the Whitewood Police Department. The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and South Dakota Highway Patrol are also assisting on the investigation.
A case report will be reviewed and a summary of the incident prepared and released by the Attorney General’s Office in about 30 days.

WHITEWOOD, S.D. – Area law enforcement converged on a gas station in Whitewood today after a law enforcement officer and a suspect got into a struggle.
Sturgis police were among those responding to the incident at the Sonset Gas Station, just off I-90 in Whitewood.
Sturgis Police Chief Geody VanDewater says his officers were called for emergency backup after the officer discharged her firearm and shot the suspect. A witness on scene reported the suspect was shot in the leg.
VanDewater says Sturgis police helped on scene, along with the Highway Patrol, Whitewood Police and Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.
Laurel St. between Sherman St. and Fillmore St. was temporarily shut down as police investigated the area.
