SPEARFISH, S.D. – A proposed quarry awarded a conditional use permit by the Lawrence County Commission was turned down by voters Tuesday.
The controversial quarry was proposed on land about 10 miles from the Wyoming line near Spearfish. It would have supplied a local Spearfish business with limestone.
Opponents, however, mounted a strong opposition campaign and turned in enough signatures to force a public vote.
On Tuesday, voters successfully nullified the quarry’s C.U.P. with 1,316 votes. There were 874 in favor.
