HELENA, MT – The Montana Department of Revenue is reminding all livestock owners that they need to report their livestock to the department by March 1, 2021.
The number of livestock owned as of February 1 can be reported online at ReportYourLivestock.mt.gov.
About 16,000 livestock owners who reported last year have already received notification to report
Livestock per capita fees, set by the Montana Department of Livestock, are due May 31, 2021. Livestock owners may pay these when they report. Otherwise, they will receive their bill in early May.
All livestock owners must report the number of each type of livestock they own. Even if it’s one horse or a few chickens, they must be reported. According to Montana law, livestock owners need to report: cattle, sheep, swine, poultry, honey bees, goats, horses, mules, asses, llamas, alpacas, domestic bison, ostriches, rheas, emus, and domestic ungulates.
If a report wass files last year there must be a livestock report filed this year, even if livestock have been sold.
Montana livestock fees are charged per capita, meaning owners pay the fee for each animal.
Livestock per capita fees help fund Department of Livestock programs used for: monitoring animal health, monitoring and restricting livestock imports, tracking animal movements, preventing and investigating livestock theft and managing predators.
It should also be noted that livestock per capita fees must be paid in order for producers who are applying for livestock loss payments to receive their checks
