Lon Lyman, age 80, of Murdo, South Dakota, died on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre.
Graveside services will be held 1:00 p.m. CDT, Thursday, October 12, at the Murdo Cemetery.
A luncheon will follow at the Senior Citizens Center in Murdo.
Lon M. Lyman was born September 9, 1943, in Denver, Colorado, the son of Lyn and Dorothee (Collins) Lyman. His mother and he lived in Bozeman, Montana for a short time while his father was in the Army during WWII.
After his father’s discharge from the Army in 1944, the family moved to his grandfather’s homestead 10 miles north of Okaton. Lon grew up and received his education in Murdo, graduating in 1961. After graduation, Lon attended South Dakota State University, majoring in campus wildlife. Lon then attended Black Hills State University, graduating in 1968.
Lon then taught school at Okaton, Scenic, New Underwood, Philip, and Rapid City, for approximately 10 years. Some of Lon’s best friends today are the kids he taught in school. After his educational years, Lon began his career in agriculture, returning to the ranch in 1990.
Lon met the love of his life while in Murdo, Susan Iversen, and they were married February 19, 2003, in Rapid City. They made their home in the Murdo area all their married life.
Lon loved what he did for a living and had no intention of retiring. He died under full harness, doing what he loved.
Survivors include his wife Susan of Murdo; one daughter Lona Sims of Sarasota, Florida; three grandchildren Alec (Belle) Riehemann, Candace Riehemann, and Ryan Sims; one great-granddaughter Adelyn Riehemann; one step-son Nathan Barnes and his wife Carrie of Piedmont; one step-daughter Kristen Aske and her husband Dustin of Murdo; six step-grandchildren Connor, Graden, and Adley Barnes, and BreAna, Breckin, and Bowden Aske; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Lon was preceded in death by his parents.
On October 7, 2023, Lon Lyman cashed in his chips.
Memorials may be made to the Jones County Booster Club, the Jones County Community Foundation, and the Murdo Ambulance.
