Lone COVID-19 death in the state died in Mitchell

MITCHELL, S.D. – The State Health Department says the Pennington County man in his 60’s who died as a result of the COVID-19 virus, actually died at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell.

Avera Queen of Peace CEO Tom Clark says 16 staff were involved and put on self-isolation.

“Some of those staff have returned to work, some of those staff are still at home,” says Clark.

He says the staff affected were the ones that were exposed before the virus risk was realized.

“The protocol is that you go into self-isolation for up to 14 days. Many of them have been a-systematic and I believe have returned to work.”

Clark says all have been tested as far as he knows everything’s been negative.

The man never made it back to the western side of the state.

As of noon Monday South Dakota now has ten confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus.
