Lost Cabin Fire is 50-percent contained Friday night

CUSTER, S.D. – Fire fighters worked throughout the day to secure the perimeter of the Lost Cabin Fire in the Black Elk Wilderness Area. The fire was 50 % contained today at 5:00 p.m.

Crews will continue to patrol and conduct mop up operations in the coming days. Smoke will be present for the next several days as well.

Lost Cabin Trail #2 will remain closed from the intersection of Trail #9 to the Palmer Gulch Trailhead until the fire is out and it is safe to re-open.

The size of the fire was kept to approximately 5 acres.

Federal and local resources responded, including a hand crew of approximatly 20 personnel, 2 Blackhawk helicopters from the South Dakota National Guard and a type 3 helicopter.
