Man accused in hit and run accident that killed child sentenced to prison

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A Rapid City man charged in a fatal hit and run that killed a child was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison.

George Matousek, who earlier pleaded guilty to second degree manslaughter, was driving 75 mph in a 35 mph zone when he hit another car at the intersection of East Boulevard and East New York Street, killing 18-month-old Mackayla Dillon.

He was arrested near Spokane, Washington in October 2019, one-year after fleeing the scene of the accident in October 2018. He was extradited to South Dakota and booked into the Pennington County Jail in February 2020.

He appeared in Pennington County court via closed-circuit television. Seventh Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey Connolly sentenced Matousek to 15 years behind bars, instead of the maximum 10 years for the charge of 2nd-degree manslaughter.

Due to the severity of the crime and George’s extensive criminal history the judge felt the maximum sentence was appropriate and he is no eligible for probation.
