PIERRE, S.D. – A Pierre man charged in the November 2023 stabbing death of a Rapid City woman in a Pierre apartment has been found incompetent to stand trial on the charges against him.
A competency hearing was held April 17th.
Sixth Circuit Judge Kristina Klinger ruled that 25 year-old David Shangreaux, Jr. was not competent stand trial for the death of 17 year-old Evie Maxey. In the order, on file in Hughes County, Klinger says outpatient treatment for Shangreaux is not appropriate due to concerns Shangreaux is a danger to himself and others.
Shangreaux was ordered to the Human Services Center in Yankton for a quote…reasonable period of time, not to exceed four months.
Shangreaux has also been granted new court-appointed attorneys.
Clint Sargent and Raleigh Hansman of Sioux Falls have been appointed to represent Shangreaux. Attorneys Justin Bell and Cody Honeywell motioned Klinger to withdraw as Shangreaux’s representation saying in the motion that the attorney-client relationship had irretrievable broken down.
Shangreaux is charged with First and Second Degree Murder and Aggravated Assault.
Trial is tentatively set for mid-August.
