PIERRE, S.D. – The murder trial of a Pierre man charged with killing a teenager from Rapid City, S.D., in November 2023 is expected to begin next month.
During a competency hearing on April 17, 2024, Sixth Circuit Judge Kristina Klinger ruled that then 25 year-old David Shangreaux, Jr. was not competent at that time to stand trial for the death of 17 year-old Evie Maxey.
In court documents, the judge said outpatient treatment for Shangreaux would not be appropriate because of concerns that he is a danger to himself and to others. Shangreaux was sent to the Human Services Center in Yankton for “a reasonable period of time, not to exceed four months.”
A court competency hearing was held last week in the case of now 26 year-old David Shangreaux, Jr.
He’s charged with First and Second Degree Murder and Aggravated Assault connected to the death of 17 year-old Evie Maxey. She was found with multiple stab wounds in the bathroom of an apartment in Pierre after police responded to a disturbance call in November 2023.
Prosecutors anticipated needing five days to lay out their case against Shangreaux, while the defense expected to need three days or less to lay out their case. Additionally, the defense withdrew pleas relating to a mental illness defense.
Jury selection is set to start April 23, 2025.
