Man charged with murder in connection with death of infant makes court appearance

RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Rapid City man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder for allegedly causing the death of an infant in March.

James Cunningham, 26, a senior airman assigned to Ellsworth Air Force Base, was indicted and charged with second-degree murder. He initially was charged with aggravated child abuse before the baby died nine days after being taken to the hospital.

On March 3rd, the Rapid City Police Department was dispatched to a home for a report of an unresponsive child. The baby was first taken to a hospital in Rapid City before being flown to Sioux Falls.

Cunningham is set to appear in court again on June 1.

He remains in jail in lieu of $100,000 cash bond.
