Man convicted of past child rape, convicted again on charges of rape

DEADWOOD — After being convicted of child rape in Pennington County, a Rapid City man has been convicted of rape in Lawrence County.

Nathan David Hankins, 27, was found guilty May 20 of two counts of first-degree rape.

Hankins was indicted by a Lawrence County grand jury Dec. 18, 2019 and charged with two counts of first-degree rape of a child under the age of 13, a Class C felony punishable by a mandatory minimum 15-year prison sentence per count – up to life in prison.

Both charges surround events that occurred during 2018 in Lawrence County upon the same child victim who was eight years old at the time the crimes occurred, while Hankins was 25 years old.

He remain in custody and is due back in court July 20 for sentencing.

Hankins was previously convicted of fourth-degree/statutory rape in Pennington County Aug. 19, 2014.

He escaped charges related to the possible statutory rape of a 15-year-old girl in 2018 due to legal issues related to the obtaining of evidence.
