RAPID CITY, S.D. — A man found guilty of killing a 19-year-old man in Keystone was sentenced Wednesday to serve seven years in prison.
Maxton Pfeiffer, 22, was convicted in March for the killing Ty Scott in June of 2018.
Pfeiffer was at a home on First Street in Keystone along with Scott and several others when he picked up a handgun, pointed it at the group, and shot Scott, who was found dead at the scene.
Pfeiffer and his defense attorney claim the shooting was unintentional, and that Pfeiffer didn’t realize the gun was loaded.
Judge Jeffrey Connolly sentenced Pfeiffer to 30 years in prison with 23 of those suspended, plus 180 days credit for time served.
He’s also required to pay about $9,000 in restitution and court costs.
Pfeiffer’s defense attorney indicated at multiple points throughout the Wednesday hearing that they will be filing an appeal to the South Dakota State Supreme Court.
