RAPID CITY, S.D. – Devin White Calf, 23, of Pine Ridge will spend 37 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter for the September 2023 drunken car crash which killed 16-year-old Leah Sky.
White Calf, Sky, and others spent a Friday night drinking together. With the entire group reportedly drunk, White Calf chose to drive. While traveling downhill on a poorly maintained gravel road on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, White Calf lost control of the Chevy Equinox and rolled it. Sky and another unnamed minor were ejected. Sky died at the scene of the accident, and the other teenage girl broke her back.
When police arrived, White Calf reportedly told them another man was driving and fled the scene. Police quickly realized this was untrue, as that man was already in custody for an unrelated incident. White Calf’s blood alcohol content was .202 when he was evaluated at a nearby hospital.
White Calf apologized to Sky’s family at the sentencing hearing. Still, the judge sentenced him to the upper end of the guidelines, and White Calf will spend three years and one month in prison with three years of supervised release.
