Man leads law enforcement on chase that ends in Sturgis Sunday

STURGIS, S.D. – Sturgis Police and other local law enforcement agencies were involved in a short pursuit that took place Sunday afternoon in the Sturgis area.

Sturgis Police Chief Geody Vandewater says law enforcement received a driving complaint coming down Boulder Canyon from Deadwood headed towards Sturgis.

The subject of the complaint got onto I-90, and headed eastbound before a Meade County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop him in the Piedmont area.

The driver did not stop and headed back towards Sturgis, where officers deployed spike strips to deflate his tires. The subject, after running over the strips, took I-90, Exit 32 at Sturgis and pulled into the Common Cents convenience store, where law enforcement surrounded his vehicle and took him into custody.

The subject, whose name was not released, had outstanding warrants, and drugs according to Vandewater. He was also on a probation hold.

Agencies involved were the Meade County Sheriff’s Office, Sturgis Police Department and Summerset Police Department.
