Man pleads not guilty to accusation he started wildfire on Buffalo Gap National Grassland

RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Rapid City man has pleaded not guilty to starting a fast moving wildfire at Buffalo Gap National Grassland last year.

On March 6, 2021, the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands in Custer County suffered a fire that claimed almost 2,600 acres. Dillion Rose has been charged with causing a fire, operating a motor vehicle off designated roadways and carelessly and recklessly operating a motor vehicle.

Court documents indicate Dillon Rose was carelessly and recklessly operating a motor vehicle off designated roadways.

Rose’s alleged actions are believed to have started the March 6 fire that burned 2,600 acres of trees, brush and grass.

The jury trial is set for 9 a.m. on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 in United States District Court.
