Man sentenced to four years for animal cruelty

WHITEWOOD, S.D. – A Whitewood man has been sentenced to four years in prison on animal  cruelty  charges.

Thoma Mraz, 50, was sentenced this week.

He was arrested in October of 2020 on five counts of felony animal cruelty and 26 counts of animal neglect after law enforcement found a number of malnourished dogs at his Whitewood home.

Mraz reached a plea agreement with the state in which all the felony charges were dropped and he pleaded guilty to 12 counts of animal neglect.

Mraz was sentenced to one year with eight months suspended on each count, for a total of 48 months to run consecutively.

Mraz is also serving time for a rape charge out of Meade County.
