Man who placed explosive device on porch of Rapid City home sentenced to prison

RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Rapid City man who placed an explosive device on the porch of a Rapid City home was sentenced to prison Tuesday.

George Irwin-Schacht, was given 10 years in prison with 2 years suspended for an incident that happened in August of 2020.

Police were dispatched to a house on the 100 block of MacArthur Street on August 9, 2020, at around 5:20 p.m. for a report of an incendiary device that was located on the porch of the residence.

On arrival, police made contact with the occupant of the residence, and they located the device and reviewed security footage from a neighboring residence.

During the course of the ensuing investigation, detectives learned of a similar incendiary device which was located at a residence north of Rapid City in Meade County.

Irwin-Schacht was originally charged with possessing explosives with criminal intent an carrying or placing explosives so as to endanger life.

A search warrant for his home later uncovered additional bomb-making materials.
