Man who pleaded guilty in connection to hit and run death sentenced to prison

RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Rapid City man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in the fatal hit and run crash of a man in December of 2019.

Zachary Fegueroa pleaded guilty last month to vehicular homicide in connection with the death of Joseph Martinez.

Judge Jeffrey Connolly sentenced him to 15 years in prison with one year suspended and gave him credit for 1,098 days he’s already served.

Court documents indicate Feueroa was driving an SUV southbound on East North Street in Rapid City on December 6, 2019, with a blood alcohol content nearly twice the legal limit when he struck Martinez. He then fled the scene.

In court, Fegueroa said, “I’m very sorry for what I did”. Fegueroa’s attorney cited his client’s cognitive and mental health issues and says he hopes the Department of Corrections can find an appropriate facility for him.
