Man who went on crime spree in Rapid City makes court appearance

RAPID CITY, S.D. – A man who went on a massive crime spree Tuesday morning made his initial court appearance today.

Billy Robertson, 33, is charged with 13 felonies, ranging from aggravated assault to grand theft after leaving what Rapid City interim police chief Don Hedrick called one of “the largest crime scenes in Rapid City’s history.”

Robertson appeared via video feed from the Pennington County Jail.

The Rapid City Police Department has accused Robertson of stealing two pickups, breaking into three homes or garages, and stabbing, assaulting or threatening six people during an early morning crime spree Tuesday.

Robertson was apprehended by police after he allegedly drove towards an officer who shot at him multiple times but did not hit him. Robertson was driving across the Meadowbrook Golf Course at the time.

Prosecutors say Robertson’s actions could have killed someone and wanted him held without bail.

A public defender asked Judge Tellinghuisen to hold Robertson in jail without bond as well until Robertson’s assigned defense lawyer could make an argument during an upcoming bond hearing.

Tellinghuisen agreed to that request.
