Margaret Wheeler, a beloved soul who graced this world with her warmth and kindness like none other, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2024. Her legacy is one of love, laughter, and cherished memories that will forever linger in our hearts.
Born in Santa Cruz, California, Margaret enjoyed trips to the ocean and camping in the California forest. Her summers spent at her grandparent’s place on Pender Island in British Colombia, were etched in her heart. Those lush green fields witnessed her laughter, her dreams, and her connection to nature.
Margaret’s circle of friends extended far beyond the shores of Santa Cruz. She was a loyal confidante, always ready with a listening ear and a comforting smile. Whether it was assembling electronics at the Watkins-Johnson Company or serving patrons at the Cheyenne Crossing restaurant, Margaret’s compassion shone through. She cared deeply for others, leaving an imprint of kindness wherever she went.
Her greatest joy in life lay in her three children: Amanda Wiley, Trevor Wheeler, and Cody Wheeler. They were her compass, guiding her through life’s twists and turns. Amanda’s laughter, Trevor’s determination, and Cody’s kindness filled her days with purpose and pride. Joining them was her two granddaughters, Fay and Bella Wiley. Margaret’s legacy will forever be intertwined with the love she poured into these precious girls.
In 1999, Margaret embarked on a life-changing chapter. She bought a house and moved to the charming town of Lead, South Dakota. Nestled among the Black Hills, Lead welcomed her with open arms—a place where her spirit found a home. She spent most of the time on her deck where she enjoyed tending to her plants, drinking coffee, and spending time with those she loved.
Margaret’s love for her dogs was boundless. Their wagging tails and joyful barks were music to her ears, and she never missed a chance to cuddle with them. In her presence, Krump, Shockley, Jake, and Delphi felt safe, cherished, and unconditionally loved. Although they were chaotic at times, they brought a certain comfort in Margarets heart.
In her final year, she displayed immense courage as she fought a relentless battle against cancer. Despite the hardships, surrounded by the love of her family and friends. Her strength and determination will forever inspire those who knew her.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and the enduring bonds of family. She is survived by her three children, Amanda Wiley of Lead, Trevor Wheeler of Bismarck, and Cody Wheeler of Lead. Her two grandchildren, Fay Wiley and Bella Wiley of Lead. Margaret was preceded in death by her father, Alexander Morrison; her mother, Audrey Morrison; along with her first husband, Bill Wiley; ex-husband, Jim Wheeler; and late fiancé, Kirk Sallaway.
As we bid farewell to this extraordinary woman, let us celebrate her legacy. Margaret Wheeler’s spirit lives on—in the gentle crash of ocean waves, the melodies of her favorite songs, and the kindness we extend to one another.
