Marge Stevenson, 85, passed away on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at Monument Health Care Center in Sturgis, South Dakota.
Marjorie Ellen Speer was born on January 27, 1938, in Fort Pierre, South Dakota. Her parents were Glen Edward Speer and Letha Ellen Reese. She grew up and attended school in Pierre along with her three sisters Glenna, Doris and Elaine.
Marge married Kenneth Eugene Batley in May 1955. Gene was in the Navy, so they made their home in various places where he was stationed. They had two daughters together. Deborah Lynn was born in San Diego, California in March 1956 and Kim Rene was born in Reno, Nevada in June 1960. Marge and Gene later divorced. She and the girls moved back to the Pierre area.
Marge married Stanley Gale Caldwell in December 1971. They lived in Pierre and had 1 daughter. Cara Gay was born in Pierre in June 1972. Marge and Stan later divorced. Marge stayed in Pierre with Cara until she graduated from high school in 1990.
Marge moved to the Denver area for a few years where she lived with her sister Dory. They later moved back to South Dakota and lived next door to each other in Spearfish for many years.
Marge married George Stevenson in June 1995. They worked together in Deadwood where they met and made their home in Spearfish.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, November 11, 2023, at Black Hills Funeral Home in Sturgis.
Marge was a hard worker from a young age, at times holding down several jobs when raising her girls. She worked at various places including the State of South Dakota, casinos in Deadwood and in home daycare. She spent 14 years as a secretary at the Pierre Police Department.
Marge was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Dory and Elaine; a two-year-old brother, Billy; each of her three husbands; and a son-in-law, David Mullaney.
She is survived by her three daughters, Deb (Bill) Schmidt of Sturgis, Kim (Bernie) Ostwald of Lead, and Cara (Chuck) Walker of Fremont, Nebraska; seven grandchildren, Barb (Ross) Mullaney-Brich, Pat Mullaney, Christopher (Corttnee) Schmidt, Todd Locke, Amy Locke, Kacy Walker and Catherine Walker; 11 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; and her sister, Glenna.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, November 11, 2023, at Black Hills Funeral Home in Sturgis.
