Marlyce Jeanne Huyck, age 88, of Spearfish, South Dakota, passed away Thursday, January 9, 2025, at Spearfish Canyon Healthcare.
Marlyce was born January 28, 1936, in Sioux Falls, SD, the daughter of H.P. and Vi (Norton) Hirtes. She attended school in Brookings, SD and graduated from Brookings High School in 1954 and Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, SD in 1956. Marlyce taught in Eureka, SD, for two years before her marriage to Bruce D. Huyck on November 6, 1957. They moved to Kansas City in 1958 where their two children were born: Greta and Philip. Marlyce returned to school at University of Kansas where she received her degree in Elementary Education in 1972. She taught 5th and 6th grade in Kansas City for two years before moving to Spearfish, SD. Marlyce worked at Salt Creek All American, managed the Senior Center, and later operated Huyck’s Diesel Repair with her husband, Bruce. She was a longtime member of the Spearfish United Methodist Church, was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan, and enjoyed quilting.
Preceding her in death were her mother and stepfather, Vi and Dell Long; father and stepmother, H.P. and Leona Hirtes; husband, Bruce Huyck in 1992; and her uncle and aunt, Willard and Hazel Haines.
Survivors include her daughter, Greta McCarthy and husband, John of Red Oak, IA; son, Philip Huyck of Billings, MT; grandson, Zachary McCarthy and wife, Paige of Belgrade, MT; sister-in-law, Nina Bitz and husband, Dennis of Minnetonka, MN; siblings, Gayle Nilson and husband James of Webster, SD; Mike Hirtes and wife, Juaneta of Columbia Falls, MT; Patti Weber of Madison, SD; Dani Jo Mohn and husband, David of N. Las Vegas, NV; Dell Jacobson and wife, Shari of Florence, SD; and Glen Long of Watertown, SD; and many other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at 10 AM, Monday, May 5, 2025, at United Methodist Church in Spearfish, SD.
