Mataya Ward captures top time in Goat Tying Tuesday night at NHSRF

GILLETTE, Wyo. – The National High School Rodeo Finals continued Tuesday at Gillette.

In the team standings, Texas took over the girl’s top spot with 1,140 points. Previous number one, South Dakota, is sitting in fifth with 690 points. Oklahoma is second, Utah is third and New Mexico is fourth.

In the Boy’s team standings, Texas is also number one with Utah second and Wyoming third. South Dakota is sitting in 8th place.

In the overall team standings, South Dakota is fifth with Texas leading the charge ahead of Utah, Wyoming and Okalahoma.

Ward, a Belle Fourche High School multi-sport standout, placed first in the goat tying with a top time of 7.19 seconds. Sturgis’ Landry Haugen tied for the fourth-best time in Tuesday’s morning performance with a run of 8.47 seconds

In the saddle bronc Tuesday night, Thayne Elshere of Hereford was second with a 69 point ride. Heston Harrison of Oklahoma won the round with a 71 point ride.

In the Steer Wrestling, Grey Gilbert of Buffalo placed fourth with a time of 5.79.

Action continues Wednesday at the NHSRF.
