STURGIS, S.D. – Update on our story below. The Meade County Sheriff’s Office says:
STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade County Sheriff’s Office says they are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a Good Samaritan that stopped to assist a deputy Monday.
Chief Deputy James Johns says deputies responded to a report of a vehicle driving erratically on Hwy 34, near White Owl on Monday. He says several complaints were received about a blue vehicle stopping in the middle of the roadway, driving slowly, and then speeding up at high rates of speed. A deputy located the vehicle driving west near Union Center and initiated a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle initially stopped, but them took off at a high rate of speed and a pursuit ensued.
The vehicle eventually stopped, and the MCSO deputy contacted the driver. The driver exited his vehicle and began to actively fight with the deputy. Johns says a good Samaritan who was passing by, stopped, and assisted the Deputy in getting the driver subdued, placed into handcuffs and into the back of the patrol vehicle.
A Sturgis Police Officer responded to the scene to assist, as he was the closest law enforcement assistance.
Other deputies were responding from the area of Tilford, where they were working on a fatal UTV crash with the SD Highway Patrol. The closest MCSO deputy was over an hour away from being able to assist. Had it not been for the efforts of this good Samaritan and the Sturgis PD, the outcome of this event may have been much worse.
The driver of the truck was identified as Corey Whirlwindhorse, 55, of Rapid City. He was arrested for the following charges:
DUI
Eluding Law Enforcement
Resisting Arrest
Impersonation with intent to deceive law enforcement
No Driver’s License
Open Container in a MV
Multiple Pennington County Warrants
At this time, the MCSO is asking for the public’s assistance in locating this Good Samaritan that stopped to assist. If anyone has information regarding the identity of the Good Samaritan, please contact the Meade County Sheriff’s Office at 605.347.2681.
