Meade 46-1 School Board opposes school voucher idea

STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade 46-1 School Board met for their December meeting Monday night, and the Governor’s proposed school voucher system was on the agenda.

Superintendent Wayne Wormstadt and the board discussed the system, and passed a letter of opposition to the plan. He says there are several concerns.

The Governor is proposing Education Savings Accounts that could be used for students attending private schools or being home schooled. Noem says the program would not be a detriment to public education funding.

The board Monday night also approved a timeline and application process to fill a vacancy on the board as Darrell Vig is resigning. The board will accept applications until December 27 and interviews will then be held on January 9. The newly appointed board member will be sworn in on January 13.

The 2025 school board election was also set for June 3, 2025. Three seats are up for election.

Also Monday night, the board passed third and final reading on changes to policy regarding public complaints on both curriculum and instruction material as well as library material. The policies describe how the district handles any complaints about material that may be deemed offensive or inappropriate for students.

First reading of a policy handling the administration of medical marijuana to qualifying students was also discussed by the board.
