STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade 46-1 School District hosted their final public input meeting Thursday to gather input on the Demographics and Facility Master Plan.
The Meade 46-1 School Board received the Demographic and Facility Master Plan report on March 30th from Architecture Inc. The information in the report will help the district plan for the next 5-10 years.
Superintendent Wayne Wormstadt says they retained the services of Architecture Inc. to review the demographics of the district, specifically the potential growth in Summerset, Piedmont, Sturgis, and Meade County. In addition to looking at the demographics, Meade School District 46-1 retained the services of Architecture Inc. for facilities planning at Sturgis Elementary School, Piedmont Elementary School, Sturgis Williams Middle School, Stagebarn Middle School, and Sturgis Brown High School.
Meade 46-1 School Board President Charlie Wheeler says among input received included a high school at Summerset. However, he says at the moment, the population there doesn’t support it.
Wheeler says studies show those moving in are an approximate 55-plus. However, he says things might change 5 to 10 years down the road.
Wheeler says this study will be useful as they work on the potential growth of the district.
The intent of the community presentations was to communicate the potential growth of the district and to help provide an understanding of the various needs of each facility and the planning for future projects.
