Meade County Commission approves first reading of amended medical marijuana license ordinance

STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade County Commission met in special session today to pass first reading of an ordinance that will update their medical marijuana license procedures.

This follows a petition that was turned in setting up a vote to have the county offer more than one medical marijuana dispensary license.

Commission Assistant Jerry Derr.

“So the commission got a petition to the marijuana ordinance that we have, Ordinance 53, and we had a resolution in place, basically, that talked about how that one dispensary license would be issued,” Derr told KBHB News Monday. “So, it was a timing thing and we issued just one license. Anyway, there was another entity that came in after we issued the one license and wanted to kinda be in the cue, and they had a late filing. “

Derr says the petition to amend Ordinance 53 was turned in, and enough signatures were verified.

“So, by changing that language, which the board set the election for August 30th, and so changing the language in kind of how we had a system in place with the lottery system with timelines and  deadlines, the amendment to Ordinance 53 that was delivered to us via the petition, kind of changed that, and so the board decided they would draft another ordinance that would speak to the licensing with liquor licenses and anything related to medical marijuana.”

Derr says this Ordinance, numbered 55, if approved, will be ready in case voters approve to amend Ordinance 53. It was approved on a 4-0 first reading today. Second reading has been set for July 26th.
