Meade County Commission sets first hearing for redistricting resolution

STURGIS, S.D. — The Meade County Commission has set a hearing for first reading of a resolution to set new commission district boundaries.

The boundaries are redrawn following the release of the census every ten years.

The hearing will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8. The new redistricting map must be approved by Feb. 22.

The commission has been discussing the new boundaries and Chairman Ted Seaman was among the commissioners not happy with the proposed changes because the new configuration takes away portions of his district.

However, Seaman says he doesn’t want to give people the impression that he doesn’t want to serve all the people of Meade County.

The county looks to retain all five districts under the new map.

The 2020 census showed Meade County’s population at 29,852. That is a 17.4-percent increase from 2000.

With the new population numbers, the county is looking at a distribution of about 5,970 people in each of the five commission districts.
