STURGIS, S.D. – As the City of Sturgis continues to work on theirs, Meade County Commissioners have passed their 2025 budget.
The budget is about a million dollars less than last year and the county plans to take less money in taxes that it is entitled to.
The 2025 budget totaled nearly $26,634,000 and the county will assess a 3.285 mill levy for property owners. The county decided not to take the 3-percent consumer price index they were entitled to for 2025.
Notable cuts in the budget include a $450,000 decrease in the highway department, a $250,000 savings due to the cutting of the Firewise program and a $10,000 decrease in the Meade County Veterans Services Officer budget.
Meade County Commission Chairman Gary Deering says the highway decrease is due to the commission opting not to schedule specific projects in its 2025 budget.
The firewise program was not funded because the county did not sign a contract with the BLM to continue the program.
And, the Meade County Veterans Services Officer budget was affected due to decreased insurance needs.
