Meade County Sheriff Candidate Pat West holds campaign kickoff party

STURGIS, S.D. – With support from fellow law enforcement folks and others, Republican candidate for Meade County sheriff Pat West held a campaign kickoff party Saturday night in Sturgis.

West, who retired as a Supervisory Special Agent with the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation in 2017, continues to work as a Drug Diversion/Prescription Fraud investigator with the D.C.I.

“I want to continue to serve as the sheriff in Meade County,” West said Saturday night. I know sheriff’s all over the state, I have good relationships with law enforcement in our neighboring counties and I want to increase that special relationship.”

West says he wants to focus on serving the entire county – the largest in the state in land area – and make it more efficient.

He touched on the drug problem and wants Meade County to work more on local level drug enforcement.

West also wants Meade County to take advantage of available funds at the federal level, like community policing and school resource officer grants. He says they are available and have never been taken advantage of in Meade County.

Current incumbent sheriff Ron Merwin has not yet officially announced he is running again, although it is anticipated he will.
