Meade County's lone medical cannabis license in limbo after missed deadline

STURGIS, S.D. – Meade County’s lone medical cannabis license is in limbo after the license owners, Puffy’s L.L.C., missed the November 1 deadline.

The issue was discussed heavily at this week Meade County Commission meeting. Because of the failure to renew, the license expired at the end of 2022.

Kittrick Jeffries, manager of Puffy’s, says the licensing format is new to everyone and says state government is struggling keep up with it. Furthermore, the establishment had hoped to get a renewal reminder letter ahead of the November 1 deadline.

However, commissioners reminded Jeffries that practice is a courtesy not a requirement.

Commissioners did agree with Jeffries’ argument that the recent loss of department heads and staff at the state level had greatly affected medical cannabis licensing, although they seemed committed to having the establishment meeting the license renewal deadline.

Commissioners discussed the matter in executive session and decided to continue the discussion until their next meeting.

Commissioners assured Jeffries the license, for the time being, would not be available to other applicants.
