Missing Minnesota found deceased off of Highway 16 south of Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Pennington County authorities say a Minnesota man reported missing Tuesday evening has been found dead at the Stratobowl off of Highway 16 south of Rapid City.

The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office says 24-year-old Alex Verburg of Mantorville, Minnesota, was reported missing around 8 p.m. Tuesday night after not being seen or heard from for several days.

The investigation led searchers to the Stratobowl Trailhead area. Searches began that night, but due to low light conditions were halted until Wednesday morning.

Using drones and foot searches, searchers found Verburg’s body in a rugged area at the bottom of a cliff. Pennington County Search and Rescue used vertical recovery to reach him.

PCSO says there’s nothing to indicate that Verburg was a victim of foul play. However the Sheriff’s Office and Rapid City Police Department are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

Agencies responding include the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department, Pennington County Search and Rescue, US Forest Service, and the Rapid City Police Department.
