Mobile home heavily damaged by Tuesday evening fire

BOX ELDER, S.D. — Box Elder area fire crews responded to a mobile home fire in the 200 block of North Ellsworth Road just before 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found a free-burning fire with moderate smoke coming from the structure.

Hampered by 100-plus-degree temperatures and wind gust up to 25 miles per hour, crews were able to contain the fire to the structure of origin, preventing the fire from destroying adjacent residential structures and other infrastructure.

Two firefighters suffered heat-related injuries and were transported to Monument Hospital for evaluation.

Two other firefighters suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene before being released.

No injuries, civilians or domestic animals were reported.

The American Red Cross of Central and Western South Dakota is assisting the occupants.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
