Motorcyclist avoids serious injury at RR crossing

STURGIS, S.D. – Sturgis Police say a motorcyclist escaped injury trying to beat a train Monday night.

Police Chief Geody Vandewater says the unidentified motorcyclist was riding on Ball Park Road and reportedly attempted to cross the railroad tracks ahead of an oncoming train.

Vandewater says the motorcyclist ended up hitting one of the crossing arms that deploy when a train crosses.

He says the motorcyclist was not seriously hurt.

Crossing arms were installed at the Ball Park Road railroad crossing several years ago following similar incidents there over the years.
