Motorcyclist hurt in July 14th crash dies from injuries

SUMMERSET, S.D. — The South Dakota Highway Patrol says a man from Katy, Texas has died from injuries sustained in a three-vehicle crash on Thursday, July 14 in Summerset.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety reports that 66-year-old Gary Holcombe was riding westbound on Interstate 90 on his motorcycle and slowed down to avoid a large box of plumbing supplies that had fallen from a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by 49-year-old Shane Devine of Piedmont.

Holcombe was then rear-ended by a GMC Sierra pickup driven by 64-year-old Anthony Schulz of Wall, and then thrown from his motorcycle. The department reports that Holcombe was not wearing a helmet and was airlifted to a hospital in Rapid City where he later died on Wednesday, July 20.

Neither Devine or Schulz were injured in the crash and both face pending charges.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
