Names released in fatal two-vehicle crash

CUSTER, S.D. – Names have been released in connection to a fatal crash at the intersection of Carroll Creek Road and US 385 in Custer County on the morning of Wednesday, July 31.

James Edwin Scragg, 27, of Rapid City was driving a 2017 Freightliner M2 Medium Duty truck northbound on US 385 at the intersection of Carroll Creek Road at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

At the same time, 24-year-old Seamus Allen Eliason of Rapid City was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Express G2500 van northbound on US 385, approaching the intersection.

Eliason failed to stop and wait for the Freightliner to make a left turn, colliding with the rear of the vehicle. Eliason was pronounced dead at the scene, while Scragg sustained serious injuries.

Scragg was wearing his seatbelt at the time. Whether Eliason was wearing his seatbelt is still under investigation.
