PIERRE, S.D. – For the third week in a row, South Dakota’s COVID-19 cases rose, totaling 269 new cases with 30 of which were considered probable.
This week’s total is 69 higher than last week and up 321 from the 170 cases reported two weeks ago.
The number of active cases jumped by 144 to 434 this week, but the number of hospitalizations went down by 5 to 33. Of those, 10 are in the I.C.U. and 3 are on ventilators.
Two new COVID-19–related deaths were reported over the past week, sending the state’s death toll to 2,043 since the pandemic began. The new deaths were two women, one in the 30-39 year age group and the other in the 80+ age group. One of the deaths was out of Butte County.
There was no change in the variant cases reported in South Dakota, according to the DOH tables. There have been 13 cases of the Delta variant detected in South Dakota.
Across the Black Hills area, there were 86 total cases with 3 of those considered as probable.
Pennington County had the highest amount of new cases with 55 confirmed cases and 2 probable cases.
Lawrence County had the second most new cases with 11.
Meade and Oglala Lakota County each had 5 new cases, with one of those listed as probable in Meade County.
There were 4 new cases in Fall River, 3 new cases in Custer and just one new cases was reported in Butte County.
There are now 13 counties listed as having “moderate” community spread; just eight counties met that criteria last week. In western South Dakota, Pennington, Lawrence, Meade, and Oglala Lakota are listed under “moderate” community spread.
