New COVID-19 cases Friday total 1,611, one new death reported

PIERRE, S.D. – In their Friday COVID-19 report, state health officials reported 1,611 new cases of the virus along with one new death.

The new death was a man in the 80-plus age range.

The number of recoveries today outpaced new cases as the active caseload fell 95 to 18,627.

The number of people hospitalized remains high, up 5 Friday to 556. The percentage of available I.C.U. beds in the Black Hills region hovers around 8-percent. In Meade County, there are 6 people hospitalized with COVID-19, but there are no patients in the I.C.U. In Pennington County, however, there are 14 COVID-19 patients in the I.C.U.

As for new cases West River, there were 355. Pennington County had another triple-digit day with 128 new cases reported. Pennington County saw their cumulative total rise to 6,647 with 2,033 remaining active.

Lawrence County added 43 new cases today, sending the total there to 1,557. There are 542 active cases in the county.

Meade County reported 31 new cases Friday, sending the cumulative total to 1,346 with 333 active.

Butte County had 19 new cases adding to the 576 total with 205 remaining active.

Other new cases West River Friday included 33 in Dewey, 19 in Todd, 16 in Fall River, 12 in Oglala Lakota, 10 in Custer, 7 each in Gregory and Tripp, 6 each in Jackson and Ziebach, 5 in Lyman, 4 each in Stanley and Corson, 3 in Mellette and one each in Harding and Jones counties.

Of South Dakota’s 66 counties, 61 are considered “substantial” community spread with five counties listed as “moderate” community spread.
