New COVID-19 cases jump back over 1,000; 9 new deaths reported in Wednesday report

PIERRE, S.D. – New COVID-19 cases were back over 1,000 Wednesday as 1,270 new cases were reported. Of those, 175 were probable cases.

Active cases increased by 745 today to a new high of 11,933 and health officials reported 60 new hospitalizations. Coupled with those who have recovered over the past 24 hours, the number of people hospitalized rose by 17 today to 412.

Nine new deaths were also reported today, sending the state’s death toll to 384. Deaths were reported out of Brookings, Campbell, Lake, Minnehaha, Oglala Lakota, Walworth and Codington. Two deaths were reported out of Walworth and Codington.

New cases across West River totaled 408 Wednesday with Pennington County accounting for 142 of those. Pennington County saw their total rise to 4,381 and active cases remain over 1,000 at 1,146.

Lawrence County added 47 new cases Wednesday after reporting just one on Tuesday. Lawrence County’s total hit 896 today with 284 active cases.

Meade County had 28 new cases Wednesday, sending the total to 944 with 201 active.

Butte County added 40 new cases, sending the total there to 355 and 157 remain active.

Oglala Lakota County saw 29 new cases, giving them a total of 907 with 459 still active.

Other new cases across West River Wednesday include 19 in Dewey, 17 in Todd, 11 each in Fall River and Gregory, 10 in Lyman, 9 in Mellette, 8 in Bennett, 7 each in Custer and Tripp, 6 each in Haakon and Harding, 4 in Jackson, 3 in Perkins and 2 in Ziebach.
