STURGIS, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Health reported 567 new cases of COVID-19 Monday and active cases reached another new high at 8,388.
The number of people hospitalized rose by four today to 304, but no new deaths were reported. In the Black Hills area, 51 people are hospitalized in Pennington County, 3 are hospitalized in Lawrence County and 2 are hospitalized in Meade County.
New cases across West River totaled 113 with Pennington County again reporting the most with 37. Pennington County has a cumulative total of 3,591 and 804 remain positive.
Both Lawrence and Butte counties reported 14 new cases Monday. The number of active cases in Lawrence is 169 today and active cases in Butte County area at 95.
Meade County only reported 3 new cases today and active cases are down 3 to 157.
Other new cases across West River today included 16 in Oglala Lakota, 4 each in Custer, Gregory and Tripp, 3 each in Todd and Jackson, 2 each in Dewey, Stanley and Bennett and one each in Fall River, Harding, Perkins, Corson, and Haakon counties.
With no new deaths reported today, the state’s death roll remains at 323.
Meanwhile, the weekly COVID-19 update for the state’s K-12 schools and public universities was released today.
As of Monday, there are 626 active cases among the state’s K-12 school systems. To date, there have been a total of 2,044 students with COVID-19 and 852 staff. This past week, there were 516 new cases reported. Health officials 265 of the state’s schools report at least one COVID-19 case.
Within the state’s public universities, there are 183 active cases. To date, there have been 1,626 students with COVID-19 and 127 staff. This past week, there were 139 new cases reported.
